Math Mr. Bertelsen saw in Europe

The Mathematical Bridge
100_1741.jpgDa Vinci Bridge.jpg
The Mathematical Bridge in Cambridge, England is said to be based on drawings by Leonardo da Vinci.
Each support is a tangent to a parabolic arch which minimizes the lateral (or sideways) stress on each piece of wood.
Hey!  Don't we study parabolas in grade 10 math and tangents in Calculus?

Holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa
100_2215.jpg
The famous tower is approximately 56m tall and is tilted 4 degrees from vertical.
How far is the top of the tower leaning over?  You could use grade 10 trigonometry to find out.
It would be safer than trying to measure it!

Passerelle Simone de Beauvoir
La Passerelle de Simone de Beauvoir.jpg
This walking bridge in Paris isn't as famous as some, but it is a cool feat of engineering that uses
interweaving parabolic arches to support each other.
