Legalization of Cannabis and Our Schools

Get the Facts

The Limestone District School Board and Bayridge Secondary School are committed to the health and wellbeing of our students and staff.

On October 17, 2018, it will be legal for individuals 19 and older to buy, use, possess and grow recreational cannabis. Cannabis will still be illegal for anyone under the age of 19 in Ontario, even after legalization, which includes most school-aged children and youth. This is the same as the minimum age for the sale of tobacco and alcohol in Ontario.

The LDSB has very detailed procedures for dealing with alcohol and drug-related incidents, including the use of cannabis. These procedures prohibit students from possessing, dispensing or being under the influence of controlled or intoxicating substances as well as, smoking or vaping on school property or at school-sanctioned events.

The following flyer: Cannabis: What Parents/Guardians and Caregivers Need to Know has been produced by CAMH and School Mental Health Assist.  It provides current information for parents and
schools.
