Student Census Coming in Spring 2020

Student Census Coming in Spring 2020
Posted on 11/14/2019

In the Limestone District School Board, we are committed to equity and inclusion and ensuring everyone feels a strong sense of belonging. To accomplish this important work, we want to learn more about our students – their backgrounds, experiences and needs.

To do this, we are asking Limestone students to participate in our confidential student census in the spring of 2020.

The census, which will be completed during class time, will ask students a variety of questions around their identity and demographics. School boards across the province are asking students to complete this census to identify and eliminate discrimination and bias from schools and classrooms. All information on individual students will remain confidential.

To help us prepare for the survey, the Board is meeting with various groups to share information and receive feedback on how the census will be administered to students. Families with children attending Limestone schools are invited to attend one of four information and sharing sessions:

  • November 18 from 6-7:30 p.m. at The Prince Charles School, Napanee
  • November 27 from 9:30-11 a.m. at Rideau Heights Recreation Centre
  • November 27 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Granite Ridge Education Centre, Sharbot Lake
  • December 2 from 6 -7:30 p.m. at Limestone District School Board, 220 Portsmouth Avenue

The Board will use the fall and early winter to develop the survey, and educate students and families around the context of the survey. The goal is to administer the survey during two weeks in the spring.

“Getting to know our students better will allow us to remove barriers and identify opportunities to help them succeed,” says Superintendent of Education Michele Babcock. “This identity-based data will support us in helping students to reach their full potential while supporting their learning, emotional, mental and physical needs. Ideally, this work will help us to ensure every student sees themselves in Limestone.”
