May has been an incredibly busy and exciting month at Bayridge, with many events already completed and more still to come. We are grateful to our students for embracing both academic challenges and extracurricular opportunities, and to our dedicated staff and volunteers who support them every day.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2">Youth Philanthropy Initiative</h2>The BSS Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) Finals took place with all Grade 10 students and some Grade 9 students participating. A big thank you to our Civics teachers and classes for embracing this meaningful opportunity.The following charities were presented:<ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem">Dawn House</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem">Family Services of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington</li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem">Interval House</li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem">Maltby Centre</li><li value="5" class="editor-listitem">Sexual Assault Centre Kingston</li></ul>We are pleased to announce that Interval House received the $1,500 YPI donation. Students have been studying her play 'Serving Elizabeth', which has been staged across Canada and explores an important question: Who gets to tell the story? More about the play: In Kenya in 1952, Mercy, a restaurant proprietor, is hired to cater the impending visit of Princess Elizabeth, soon to be Queen. In 2015, another story unfolds in London, England, where a young Kenyan-born Canadian, Tia, is working as an intern on a TV drama series about the British royal family – while also pursuing a writing project of her own. Is there a deeper connection between these two seemingly disparate worlds? An ingenious contemporary drama that keeps us guessing as it explores issues of colonialism, nationalism and the question of who gets to have a voice. Students benefited greatly from the opportunity to engage directly with the playwright.<h2 class="editor-heading-h2">Junior Mathletes News</h2>A huge congratulations to our Junior Mathletes for their successful tournament! Olivia Ellerton earned herself an individual Bronze Medal , and Tadhg Stewart, Shenbo Wu, Tiger Yu, and Dylan Yu won 1st Place! We are incredibly fortunate at Bayridge to have caring educators who go above and beyond every day to support student success. Thank you to our staff for their ongoing dedication and commitment. <h2 class="editor-heading-h2">BCSP at Science Rendezvous 2025</h2>Students from Bayridge’s BCSP (Bayridge Computer Studies Program) proudly represented our school on Saturday, May 9th, at Kingston Science Rendezvous 2026, part of Canada’s largest science festival.Being invited to participate in this event for the fifth consecutive year is a significant honour for Bayridge and a reflection of the creativity, skill, and dedication of our students and staff.This year, BCSP students showcased a collection of video games they designed and programmed in class, giving visitors the chance to play and experience their work firsthand. The exhibit was especially popular with younger attendees, who enthusiastically lined up to try the games. Our students did an outstanding job welcoming visitors, explaining how their games worked, and encouraging young players as they explored the interactive displays.The event provided an incredible opportunity for students to share their technical skills while also demonstrating communication, leadership, patience, and teamwork. Seeing our students confidently engage with the public and inspire younger children through technology was a proud moment for everyone involved.A particularly meaningful highlight was seeing former Bayridge computer science students presenting their own work at Queen’s University exhibits—an inspiring reminder of the opportunities that can grow from experiences like these.Thank you to the students who generously gave up part of their Saturday to represent Bayridge so positively in the community. Their enthusiasm, professionalism, and creativity made them exceptional ambassadors for our school.<img src="/images/2c73c104-af59-4d79-a0a6-3044c53f6667?fingerprint=ppb20260515195329" alt="ksr1" width="100%" height="inherit" style="width:100%;height:inherit;display:inline-block"><h2 class="editor-heading-h2">Coding Competition Success for BCSP Students</h2>This past Wednesday, Bayridge Secondary School’s computer science students delivered an outstanding performance at the 'Teams of 4 Coding Competition' hosted at St. Lawrence College.Bayridge was proudly represented by five teams, competing against 16 teams from across the region in this challenging programming competition, where students worked collaboratively to solve a series of coding problems under time pressure.Our students achieved exceptional results, placing 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 10th overall—an incredible showing that highlights the depth of talent within Bayridge’s computer science program.A special congratulations goes to Sam, Milo, Gabe, and Hamish, whose teamwork, problem-solving, and programming skills earned them an impressive silver medal with a 2nd-place finish.Competitions like this provide students with valuable opportunities to apply their coding knowledge in a fast-paced, collaborative environment while developing critical thinking, perseverance, and teamwork skills. Images can be saved, copied, screenshot, or shared without consent, which can have serious emotional, social, and legal impacts.Police are also reminding young people that receiving a private image does not mean it can be shared with others. Forwarding, posting, or distributing someone else’s personal images without their permission can cause significant harm and can result in criminal consequences.Kingston Police encourage youth to: •    Think before sending photos or messages online  •    Never share someone else’s private images  •    Talk to a trusted adult if they feel pressured to send images  •    Report concerning behaviour to a parent, teacher, or police  •    Use privacy settings and practice safe online habits Parents and guardians are encouraged to have open, ongoing conversations with children about digital safety, consent, and respectful online behaviour.Anyone who feels threatened, pressured, or victimized online is encouraged to seek help and report the incident. OLTS-Ontario is a transition program designed for Grade 12 students (graduating in 2026 or entering Grade 12 in Fall 2026) who have learning disabilities, ADHD, ASD, anxiety, depression, or other mental health disorders, and who are planning to attend college or university. This online program helps students prepare for the transition to postsecondary education while developing a better understanding of themselves and their learning profile. Summer Session courses are asynchronous e-learning courses offered through Minds Online and count as one of the online credits for that graduation requirement.  Courses are offered for students currently in Grades 9 to 12. Grade 8 students may reach ahead and register for the Gr 10 Civics (CHV 2O) and Careers (GLC 2O) half credit courses ONLY! Grade 8 students signing up for Civics and Careers must register for both courses with Summer Session. Session Dates: Summer Session runs from Monday, June 29 to Friday, July 24 with no classes on Wednesday, July 1. What a great end to April we've had! The last couple of weeks have been busy with the annual BSS Road Race, a Blood Donor Clinic, Earth Day activities, as well as exciting news for our Guitar Ensemble, Coding competitors, and students Gabe Bergeron and Charly Crausen. We have a tremendous amount to be proud of Blazers!<h2 class="editor-heading-h2" style="text-align: left;">Bayridge Guitar Ensemble</h2>The Bayridge Guitar Ensemble has been selected for the Virtual Ontario Provincial finals in Small Ensembles class, and received a local Kiwanis Award and prize. Representatives from the ensemble attended the 'Red Carpet Ceremony' at the Isabel Centre for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, April 28th. <h2 class="editor-heading-h2" style="text-align: left;">Blazers in the News </h2>Bayridge's very own Gabriel Bergeron has been awarded the prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarship. This scholarship is one of Canada's most prestigious undergraduate STEM scholarships, valued at $120,000, awarded to entrepreneurial-minded high school graduates. Congratulations to our BCSP students who such a commanding performance! <h2 class="editor-heading-h2">Earth Week </h2>Bayridge's Ecoteam celebrated EarthWeek from April 21-25.  Many events occurred throughout the week.  The pledge for sustainable travel started the week, while the house challenge, teamed up with Student Council Spirit Events, was a huge success to end the week.  Other events were a Nature Gallery with Arts Council, a blue and green spirit day and classes went outside for walks.  Throughout the week, conversations of how small changes can have real impacts on the planet resonated with many students.  Huge thanks to staff and students who made it all occur!  <div data-lexical-layout-container="true" style="grid-template-columns: 1fr 1fr; We thank our Senior Blazers in advance for their cooperation and support in ensuring everyone's safety. As we approach the end of the school year and graduating students prepare for their next steps, there is understandably a great deal of anticipation and excitement for the future. As part of this celebration, graduating students, as well as younger secondary students, are recognizing graduates’ achievements in a variety of ways.  However, we want to inform students and families about one particular activity that has become increasingly concerning from a safety standpoint. “Senior Assassin” is a popular game among graduating students across North America that involves students “assassinating” one another using water guns, gel projectiles, or foam darts. As a result, any report involving a possible weapon must be treated as real until proven otherwise, creating serious risk for everyone involved.  With this in mind, we ask that graduating students refrain from participating in the “Senior Assassin” game.  Student and staff safety are always our top priority, and we encourage students to recognize and celebrate achievements, including graduation, in ways that ensure everyone remains safe.  <h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Volunteer Hours for Graduating Students</h2>We still have potential graduates who have not submitted their mandatory 40 community service hours. We’ve had reports of some fast driving in our roundabout, and concerns in the Bayridge Public School parking lot, so we kindly ask families to use our school’s parking lot instead and help keep everyone safe during busy pick‑up and drop‑off times.  If our roundabout is busy, please avoid blocking the road and park in our parking lot to wait. For our student pedestrians, please ensure you adhere to traffic rules and common sense, by crossing roads at lights and avoid cutting in front of vehicles. Summer Session courses are asynchronous e-learning courses offered through Minds Online and count as one of the online credits for that graduation requirement.  Courses are offered for students currently in Grades 9 to 12. Grade 8 students may reach ahead and register for the Gr 10 Civics (CHV 2O) and Careers (GLC 2O) half credit courses ONLY! Grade 8 students signing up for Civics and Careers must register for both courses with Summer Session. Session Dates: Summer Session runs from Monday, June 29 to Friday, July 24 with no classes on Wednesday, July 1. April 17 Bayridge Secondary School Newsletter

They had fun helping out in 3 different classes and worked on art projects that have been displayed at Bayridge Public School.    <img src="/images/d2ba1608-b64f-4e8a-acc8-3f6883b06dc7?fingerprint=ppb20260418002517" alt="Badminton" width="205" height="214" style="width:205px;height:214px;display:inline-block;float:left">The badminton team has been training hard since the middle of February. We started competing in tournaments after the March Break. The Seniors finished their season last week at the Open KASSAA Championships with Shaelah Cassan and Clarke Delaney placing in the top 8 in mixed doubles, while Alex Abbink placed top 6 in men’s singles. Yesterday, the junior team competed at their KASSAA Championship.  Top 8 finishers were Emily Travers in women’s singles as well as Shahriar Hasan and Matthew Smith in men’s doubles. In mixed doubles, the grade 9 team of Chase Smith and Addy Swaine placed third while the women’s doubles team of Honoka Hisamatsu and Akira Nagano were the KASSAA Silver Medallists!  Way to go Bayridge!  Badminton club will continue Fridays right after school! BCSP Sweeps the Podium at Titans Invitational The Bayridge Computer Specialist Program didn’t just have a good showing at the Titans Invitational Coding Competition in Belleville—we swept the medals! After a full day of intense problem-solving, teamwork, and the occasional “wait… why isn’t this working?!” moment, Bayridge teams ended up on the podium in every category: <ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem">Junior Silver – Shenbo Wu, Tadhg Stewart, Dylan Yu, Tiger Yu </li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem">Senior Bronze (tie) – Evan Keeler, Andrew Burke, Denny Christopoulos, Josh Miles </li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem">Senior Bronze (tie) – Jiyeon Park, Olivia Ellerton, Sam Hachey, Liam Fraser-Evans </li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem">Senior Silver – Wylder Ballantyne, Samuel Ross, Paul Wilson </li><li value="5" class="editor-listitem">Senior Gold – Gabe Bergeron, Hamish MacGregor, Ben Saulnier, Milo Zelmanovits </li></ul>That’s right—Bayridge brought home Gold, Silver, and Bronze (and then grabbed an extra Bronze for good measure). Our students competed against some very strong teams from across the region and showed incredible perseverance, collaboration, and problem-solving skill all day long. We’re extremely proud of this group—although it does raise the question: were they this good all along, or have they just been hiding it during class?  (-; Either way… what a performance.<div data-lexical-layout-container="true" style="grid-template-columns: 1fr 1fr; This year, 17 BCSP students will be there sharing their work and running interactive activities for the community. One of the best parts of the day? Upcoming Family Engagement and Climate Survey

The Limestone District School Board is inviting families to take part in the Family Engagement and Climate Survey. This survey gives families an opportunity to share their experiences with their student’s school and with the school board.The feedback helps us understand what is working well and where we can improve. It also supports schools and school councils in building welcoming, safe, and supportive school communities.The survey includes questions about:<ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem">How schools communicate and share information</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem">Whether families feel welcome, included, and connected</li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem">Barriers to taking part in school activities, such as time, childcare, language, accessibility, or cost</li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem">Safety and bullying, including reporting and follow‑up</li><li value="5" class="editor-listitem">Licensed Before and After School Programs, including questions to help inform future planning</li><li value="6" class="editor-listitem">Some questions ask about family background to help us better understand different experiences across our communities</li></ul>Participation is voluntary and anonymous. Families may skip any questions they choose. No names or identifying information are collected. Results are shared only as grouped summaries and are used to support learning, planning, and improvement at the board, school, and school council levels.The survey will be open from May 1 to May 11 and will be available online. Families will receive an e-mail on May 1 with a link to the survey. Message from the Director

Dear Families,As we enter the spring season and final third of the school year, we are reminded of this season’s promise of renewal and growth, and the key role schools and families have together in supporting student learning and well-being. While this week has been very wet and rainy, the warmer temperatures of spring are upon us.  I would like to take this opportunity to share a few important updates with you:P.A. Day – Friday, April 17A reminder to families that tomorrow, Friday, April 17, is a P.A. Day. There will be no classes for students, and we look forward to welcoming them back to school on Monday.Family Engagement and Climate Survey – Coming in MayIn early May, Limestone will be inviting families to take part in a Family Engagement and Climate Survey. The optional survey is anonymous, and families can choose which questions they want to answer.The survey asks about topics such as feeling connected to school, family involvement, safety and bullying, communication, before- and after-school programming, and how technology like artificial intelligence is used in schools.The feedback shared through this survey helps schools and the school board understand what is working well, what could improve, and what may make it harder for some families to take part. Reviewing and analyzing this information helps support safe, welcoming, and inclusive school environments and supports the board’s obligations under the Ontario Human Rights Code. The findings support planning and decision-making that promotes equity, well being, and student success across Limestone schools. An overview of the Student Census 2025 was presented to the Board of Trustees at last night’s board meeting.
